OUR DRY SEASON HAS STARTED EARLY THIS FALL!

This year June was our wettest month with 17 to 28 inches!

The 2012 hurricane season started early and was very active before the climatological peak of September 10. A few our September days had heavy downpours, the heaviest monthly rain totals were 6.59 inches at Jacksonville Int’l Airport and 6.35 inches at Craig Field. But the downpours were not evenly distributed, leaving many neighborhoods with only wet streets and dampened lawns. Fort Caroline and Mayport reported less two inches and many places had less than half of the normal September amount.

After September 10, only a few storms were churning parts of the central and eastern Atlantic ocean. It appears that this pattern will continue well into the month of October. The next Atlantic disturbance may become tropical storm Oscar, but should not threaten the western hemisphere. While intially moving towards the west northwest or northwest, it should be picked up by a low pressure system and westerly winds in the mid-Atlantic. That should cause it to under strong shear and move it towards cooler waters of the eastern Atlantic this weekend.
