As we pass the climatological peak of the 2013 hurricane season, tropical activity is down to a whisper! That’s not to say there won’t be a hurricane or two before the season ends on November 30. The combination of warm tropical waters and a shift to favorable conditions aloft during any week left in the hurricane season can cause one storm to blow up to a memorable named storm.

Dennis Feltgen, Public Affairs Officer for NOAA’s National Hurricane Center likens this quiet period in our hurricane season as halftime in a football game. I’ve seen people leave a game thinking it was won, only to discover they lost after they left!
