ISAAC AIMING AT FLORIDA KEYS – HEAVY RAINS FOR SOUTH FLORIDA

Tropical Storm ISAAC was continuing on a track towards the Florida Keys. At 8 AM Sunday, it was centered 135 miles east southeast of Key West moving towards the west northwest at 20 mph. Peak winds were 65 mph.

Interaction with a secondary circulation center between Jamaica and the Caymans has apparently not taken place, but we’ll be watching to see if it has any effect on ISAAC’s movement as the storm approaches the Florida keys later today.

After entering the Gulf of Mexico the first of the week, the predictions have been adjusted to a landfall farther west on the northern Gulf coast Tuesday night or early Wednesday. This is bad news for the Florida panhandle, but good news for northeast Florida and southeast Georgia.

As expected, the updated Monday-Tuesday Rainfall Predictions by the Hydrological Prediction Center have now greatly increased the rainfall for southern Florida.

The extended forecasts for Wednesday and Thursday call for 10 inches or more from extreme west Florida through southeast Alabama to north Georgia and the Carolina mountains. Really bad news for a lot of folks in those places.
