El Nino occurs when NOAA Climate Prediction Center recognizes 3 consecutive months of Eastern Pacific upper ocean temperatures at or greater than +0.5 degrees Celsius.

Hopefully, we will have El Nino conditions over the eastern Pacific Ocean during the peak months of the Atlantic hurricane season. With El Nino, upper level westerly winds over the tropics are likely to create wind shear that can reduce vertical development of Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes.
