NOT MUCH TO WATCH THIS EARLY!

Katia may be the next hurricane. The remnants of Jose will dissipate tonight.

While high winds get much attention with hurricanes, IRENE reminds us that water is the big killer. It can surround you, and sometimes drown you, if you don’t seek safety when officials advise before the storm. To wait too long can be too late!

Tropical storm JOSE took a brief Atlantic cruise near Bermuda, and the final advisory on this storm was issued at 5 PM today (Monday).

KATIA can become the second major hurricane over the open Atlantic this week, but as we learned from IRENE, forecasting the strength of the winds can be very elusive. It is much better to over estimate (forecast) the wind speeds, than to under estimate them.

As of August 30, 2011, the probability for a hurricane hitting Jax soon is near 0%. For the season, it is 2% based on past history (climatology) for this location. When there’s a hurricane out there, short term probabilities can become much higher depending on its forecast track.
