DRIVE TOWARD EL NINO SHIFTS TO NEUTRAL

When we entered the 2011 Hurricane Season last month, it appeared that the La Nina – El Nino east Pacific trend was towards El Nino, which can be a negative influence on hurricane growth. To be considered an El Nino event, the waters must reach and/or exceed +0.5 degrees Celsius for at least 3 months. The recent cessation of warming just short of the +0.5C threshold makes it appear that the peak of this year’s hurricane season with neither La Nina or El Nino. We appreciate NOAA’s monitoring these conditions.
