LIKE BONNIE, DEPRESSION DISSIPATES OVER NORTHERN GULF

Tropical Depression 5 has fallen apart!

The center of Depression 5 became rather diffuse with the true center reforming northwest of yesterday’s axis of rotation. The heaviest rains no longer converged as they did Tuesday, but they actually rotated farther away from the axis of rotation. That’s the reverse of the process that causes tropical storms to strengthen.

The same type of upper level wind shear that killed DEPRESSION BONNIE appears to be the reason DEPRESSION #5 dissipated today. But was that the only reason? Isn’t it ironic that both systems faded away in the vicinity of this year’s big Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill!
