COLIN SUCCOMBS TO HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT

A dry atmosphere to the west and east of COLIN saps energy from the storm.

Just like predecessor BONNIE in the Gulf of Mexico, tropical storm COLIN in the Atlantic failed to maintain tropical storm strength. It has weakened to depression status on its approach to Bermuda. At 2 PM Sunday, the center of the low pressure passed 45 miles west of the island with peak winds around 35 mph. It is not expected to return to tropical storm status as it acclerates northward from a hostile dry environment around latitudes 30 and 35 towards a region of strong upper level wind shear from latitude 40 northward.
